Match Report |
There are games that are destined to enter a restricted set of matchs under the "legendary" label. This site remembers the cup final of 2013, when an unfancied Panorama gave coach Kelly the first of many trophies. Or many of those games were Panorama on the paper had to chances, but somehow managed to punch above their weigh. Like a draw against the mighty Mzansi in 2016, or tonight's game, for example. In his short career as Panorama manager, Olgiati had to navigate a plethora of injured or unavailable players, but tonight's game took the issues to the extreme. With barely a starting eleven, Olgiati managed to convince Wills to come back from a 2 years retirement (and with only 5 games played in the last 4 years!) in order to provided some rotation on a night that promised to be difficult. Against Global United, the current team at the top of the league, Panorama played with a 4-5-1, with Jeanes returning in goals, and an unusual back four with Franz and Brown wide, with O'sullivan and De Klerk in the middle. Olgiati stared on the right, with Benites in the left, with Bailey, Egbers and Davidson in the middle. Rinshaw, up front, was the solitary striker. Global started the game on the accelerator as usual, playing with precision and speed, trying to get players behind Franz and Brown, but Panorama, playing a higher line than usual, was very careful in allowing any dangerous balls near Jeanes. Out of nowhere, Panorama striked first with Bailey, hitting the ball from the outside of the area with power and spin, bamboozling the Global's keeper. The reply from Global didn't wait. Wiht Booth playing in the back, and Staton in the midfield, they scored 2 goals in rapid succession, taking advantage of the few mistakes by Panorama. Just when they were pushing trying to open the floodgates, Bailey, in the perfomance of a lifetime, scored again from distance with a precise lob. Global knew that in the second half Panorama would have struggled. Without fresh legs, and with only a rotational player, sooner or later they would have collapsed. But this time, when the legs started to buckle a little, when the tiredness started to set in, when the precision was getting worse, all the Panorama's players found an extra gear in a second half that will definitely enter history. For 35 minutes (until they scored the 3rd goal at the end, 5 meters offside), no Global player could beat Jeanes, saving the impossible time after time. No Glboal player could get past the back four, with O'Sullivan and De Klerk controlling the game from the back, and with Franz and Brown doing their job against quicker wings time after time. Global couldn't even controlled the midfield, with Panorama pressing deep, with every single player leaving everything on the field in the pursuit of glory. Olgiati rolled back the years with a lot of running and holding the balls in important key moments. Davidson and Rinshaw created all sort of problems annoying the backline. Benites left both lungs on the field, while Rinshaw and Wills were forced to play solitary striker and keep the pressure up when the ball wasn't close of them. Egbers provided the needed tackling and presence in the midfield, while Bailey decided that he wanted to single handledly win the game when he scored the 3-2 with a fantastic volley from a corner. Without a plan B, Global kepy plaiyng their passing game, but they ended up fighting againt an enemy you cannot beat: time. Wiht time running out, Olgiati once again got centimeters away from scoring after flicking a cross by Davison, before Egbers managed to score from a hard angle the 4th goal of the night. Eventually Global pulled one back, but was too little, too late, and Panorama celebrated a glorious night with a fantastic result! Some stats from the game:
