After a hard year culminated in the relegation from the top division, coach Kelly brought some new players into the fold and started a revolution, convincing former players to re-join and finding himself with a record 18 available players (Stoychev and Kennedy were the only two missing). For the first time in many year, Kelly had enough quality subs to use a friendly as a massive try-out in order to see if the new players would gel well with the consolidated ones. Manuel Meroni, after a quick appareance earlier in the season, was signed to provide some quick feet on the wings. With Stoychev being probably unavailable for a long period, Kelly went for Stoy's doppelganger from Italy, adding to ever growing list of foreigners in the team (with 3 italians!). Another useful additon was Brent Bailey, discovering the joy of Vets football in his first outing. Panorama dominated start to finish but after almost 5 weeks without a game, and with 1 week to go before the first round of the cup (away at Randburg), there was still a lot of rust in the legs, and bad decision making was expected. Randfontein provided some sort of resistence in the first half, but Bezuidenhout (another player brought back in the fold by Kelly), scored a cracker after receiving a ball from Bailey and scoring from 25 meters. In the second half Kelly experimented with different players and formations. The 2-0 was scored by De Leo, winning the ball just outside the area, while the final 3-0 was scored by Jeanes, collecting his deflected pass to score from the left. Vorster, Dixon, Robson and Smith dominated in defense ,leaving zero chances to a very tired Randfontein. Overall, after a bleak few months, it was an encouraging performance by Panorama. |
